MDHC 1st vs North Stafford 3rd XI
Market Drayton Hockey Club began their league campaign in style with an impressive 4-0 victory over North Stafford 3rd XI at Wrekin College.
Drayton were keen to carry their strong pre-season form into the opening league fixture, and they made the perfect start. Having successfully transitioned from left back to left wing during pre-season, Jos Parsons opened his account for the season after just four minutes. A well-worked move and some slick passing created the opportunity, and Parsons finished confidently to give MD an early lead.
North Stafford gradually settled into the contest and enjoyed periods of possession, but Drayton remained well organised and disciplined defensively. Midway through the first half, some excellent individual skill from Jordan Chevins saw him break through on goal and calmly double the advantage after 25 minutes.
Drayton continued to play with confidence and purpose, and just before the break Parsons grabbed his second goal of the afternoon. Good link-up play with Nick Cooper created the opening, allowing Parsons to make it 3-0 and send MD into half-time with a commanding lead.
The second half saw Market Drayton focus on controlling possession, dominating proceedings and limiting North Stafford's opportunities. Their superiority was rewarded in the 52nd minute when a well-constructed passing move put Cooper through on goal, and he finished well to extend the lead to 4-0.
It was a convincing performance and a clear demonstration of the progress the team has made in recent months. The result provides an excellent start to the league season and plenty of confidence ahead of next week's fixture away to Wolverhampton Wulfrunians 3rd XI, where Drayton will be looking to continue their winning form.
